Our call for pictures and memorabilia has brought us these three flour sacks. The two on the right have been restored and are hanging in the lobby of West Michigan Savings Bank. The one on the left belongs to the city and is awaiting a decision for restoration. The page background of this site is the 1880 lithograph of Bangor which also hangs in the lobby of the West Michigan Savings Bank. We need everyone's help with this mission. This is an organized effort to document life, business, and events, detailing how Bangor has looked and lived over the past 100 plus years. Please tour our web site and find out what has been done and what needs to be done to make this venture a success. Become involved and bring Bangor's past to life. |

A nationally known social group called the Maccabees was organized in Bangor in 1893. A county wide convention was to be held in June of 1894 and it was decided that Bangor would be the host. The above photo is a reflection of that event. Several hundred members attended from all over Southwest Michigan. The community rolled out the red carpet. The arch across the street was designed by T. Z. Jones, a local gentleman. He got the idea from a similar arch he saw in Liverpool, England. A negative for this picture was found in the Bangor school archives. The photo graces the cover of our book. |
