In 1884, the village council officially named the cemetery as Arlington Hill, and set aside four cemetery plots for a soldier's burial ground.  This section was to be supervised by the A. Lincoln  post of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).  In 1897, the post procured the above 16,000-pound cannon as a memorial to the final resting place of those who had served their country.
