In 2006, we asked Robert C. Myers, curator of the Berrien County Historical Society, to speak at a general membership meeting.  He came to give advise on how to go about creating and funding a museum in Bangor.  While at the meeting he had a chance to look at my book on Bangor.  It just so happens, Mr. Myers was also on the board of the Historical Society of Michigan.  Every year the state historical society gives State History Awards for books in different categories.  He recommended that we nominate my book for an award.  City Manager, Larry Nielson gladly submitted “Bangor – Our History in Photographs.”

I always have to be careful to state that this book was the effort of several people.  Many thanks still go to all those who contributed.  Granted, it was my idea. I did the research and book lay-out.  But, Stephanie Grier VanKovering’s name also appears on the cover.  Without her and her mother Jane Grier, this book may still be on the drawing table.

Those who were honored with a State History Award at the banquet.

In early September 2006, I was notified by the Historical Society of Michigan that the book was elected to receive their prestigious State History Award.  I was invited to appear at a reception and dinner of the annual conference in Bay City on September 22, 2006 to accept.  The award was presented at the reception at the Bay City County Museum.  There were eleven different categories of which seventeen various books and projects were honored.  In the private printing category, twenty-seven books were nominated and two were honored of which ours was one.  Robert Myers presented me the award (top photo).  This was a real tribute not only to those of us who worked on it, but to the entire community of Bangor.

My friends who traveled to Bay City to support me at the presentation.

Due to a scheduling conflict, my wife Linda and daughter Elizabeth were unable to attend.  Much to my surprise, several people from the community drove clear across the state to be there for the presentation and banquet.  It was a great honor to receive such an award from the State of Michigan.  It was as great an honor to have the support of friends from Bangor.

Thanks to everyone involved.
